German Music – 10 Songs that will boost your German

10 Songs, 10 Different Artists, 10 Different Genres, 10 Vocabulary Lists, and 10 English Translations.

Are you learning German and looking for beautiful songs that will help you improve your listening comprehension and teach you some new vocabulary? Then you’re in the right place!

Many people think that German sounds cold and rude. My opinion about that: Bullshit! Listen to all of these songs and you will notice that German sounds way better than what you’ve heard in the movies (often ones involving Hitler). After listening to the music, you may even start thinking that German is the most beautiful language in the world!

German Music

Here’s the best way to learn with music videos:

  1. Choose the songs that you like!
  2. Listen carefully to one of the songs WITHOUT reading the lyrics.
  3. Write (in German) in bullet points: what is this song about?
  4. Listen to the song again, but this time read the lyrics as you listen!
  5. Write (in German) in bullet points what you can understand now and what the song is about.
  6. Look up any unknown words in your dictionary (or my vocabulary list).
  7. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until you can understand the entire song without looking at the lyrics!

Revolverheld – Halt dich an mir fest

My personal favorite! I could listen to it the entire day on repeat. Revolverheld sing only in German, and many of their songs are well-suited to learning the language.

Unheilig – Geboren um zu leben

For many years, Unheilig has made beautiful and sentimental songs. Everyone should take the song „Geboren um zu leben“ as a model for how to live, at least a little bit. Your quality of life would immediately improve if you did.

Pur – Neue Brücken

Pur has been making music for decades, and I believe they are one of the best German bands. Dozens of their songs are well-suited to learning German. I chose their song „Neue Brücken.“ Despite being over 20 years old, in light of the many crises and the refugee situation, it still speaks to us today. It talks about tolerance, charity, and the fight against xenophobia.

Glasperlenspiel – Nie vergessen

Glasperlenspiel got their start in a church cover band. But since 2011 the couple has been on their own, singing secular songs in German. Their electropop songs are sometimes sung very fast, but they are sung clearly and distinctly, making them good for German learners.

Helene Fischer – Atemlos durch die Nacht

Helene Fischer is currently the most successful German singer and entertainer. She brought German „Schlager Music“ (traditional German music, more or less) back to the top of the charts. Her concerts fill stadiums with crowds of more than 50,000, and her chart-topper „Atemlos durch die Nacht“ is perfect for learning German.

Adel Tadil & Cassandra Steen – Stadt

Adel Tadil and Cassandra Steen show that Germany has been a country of immigration for a long time and sing about that fact in this song about building a city. Who do you think they want to build this city for? A hint: with more than 1 million refugees coming to Germany in a single year, we need this city now more than ever!

Nena – 99 Luftballons

Nena was a Schlager-star in the 80s, but she’s still making music, and many of her songs are more relevant today than ever before. This is the original of her anti-war song from 1983! Every German knows this song! Guaranteed!!

Jupiter Jones – Still

Jupiter Jones is a band from the Eifel (a mountain range in western Germany). The one-hit wonder’s most popular song is „Still,“ but they have other songs that could help German students, especially those who are a bit more advanced.

Peter Schilling – Terra Titanic

This is a classic from the 80s. By listening to it, you’ll improve your listening comprehension, as well as learn a lot of vocabulary about the Titanic, shipwrecks, danger, technology, ships, and oceans. You should have a basic knowledge of German before listening to this song, otherwise, it will be quite difficult to understand the lyrics.
