Summary:

“Peters Gastfamilien Projekt” (Peter’s Host Family Project) is a unique opportunity to take a look inside a real German family. You discover how they live, find out what they do in their free time, learn about typical German foods, and even communicate with the family. At the same time, you learn daily vocabulary by watching videos with clear explanations and doing exercises. You can also join the online grammar course that takes place twice a month. The course is exceptionally good for self-learners since you are able to download the complete archive and all materials.

Detailed Review

[su_divider top=“no“ size=“1″ margin=“10″][/su_divider]

German Course review Host FamilyIn this article I’d like to introduce you to an online German course from Peter Heinrich. Peter Heinrich has developed a unique German course that allows you to become a part of his family and grants you a private view into his family life. You get an up-close and personal look into the everyday life of a German family, along with grammar and vocabulary exercises that help you learn German.

[su_divider text=“German Course Review Host Family“ size=“1″ margin=“10″][/su_divider]

What does the course offer?

The course offers a view into German family life. You meet Peter, his wife Birte, their son Maynard, and the family pet, a cat named Knutzi. Peter makes 8 new videos every month (that’s two per week!), taking you with them on family trips, bringing you along to a Christmas market, and showing you typical daily activities like cooking, baking, doing laundry, and working in the garden (everything that is actually happening at that moment in the lives of the family members). This deep and private view into their personal lives that he grants you is quite unique. You get the advantages of being part of a real German family without investing the considerable time and money of a multi-week homestay in Germany.

As you are working through the course, if you ever aren’t sure if you’ve understood everything, you can contact Peter directly in the Family Forum with your questions. Additionally, there is an online grammar lesson twice per month.

As a member of Peter’s family, you have access to:

  • All videos (As of April 1, 2015: 63 videos, plus 8 new videos per month)
  • Two live grammar lessons per month
  • Worksheets, including solutions
  • Podcasts, vocab lists, and subtitles for the videos
  • Recordings of the grammar lessons that have already taken place
  • “Das Familienforum” (the Family Forum), where you can ask questions
  • Downloads of all videos, podcasts, exercises, and vocabulary lists

Who is this course suitable for?

What’s the best way to learn a language quickly and effectively? I think everyone would agree that there’s a clear answer to this question: living in a country where the language is spoken, with a family that speaks the language.

The problem? It’s usually extremely expensive, quite a time investment, and not suitable for everybody.

In this view, Peter’s “Gastfamilie” was made for people who want to improve their German and take a look into the daily life of a German family, but with a much smaller investment.

Peter teaches new vocabulary very clearly with the help of videos and photos. You also don’t need to speak any English, which isn’t the case in many other online German courses.

Peter also allows you to use all of the materials and video in your own lessons. That could be helpful for German teachers, who might be able to learn something themselves, as well as get some new ideas and materials for their own lessons.

Do you need any prior knowledge of German?

Theoretically, you don’t need any prior knowledge of German. You also don’t have to be able to speak English to take the course.

However, if you are a beginner, getting started will be a bit difficult, since only German is spoken. But with the help of the vocabulary files and subtitles, as well as the ability to pause and rewatch the videos, you will be able to understand everything.

Costs

Registration is free. After registering, you get access to one of the videos and all of the related materials, as well as Peter’s newsletter, where he regularly shares tips and tricks to help you learn German.

If you like the video and want to become a part of Peter’s family, there are two membership levels to choose from: Standard and Premium.

The standard membership costs 14.70€/month. You get 8 new videos per month, as well as access to the last 10 videos he created. All related materials, including podcasts, worksheets, audio files, and subtitles, are of course included.

The premium membership includes access to all published videos (at the moment over 60, and growing every month!) and the ability to attend the online grammar course. This costs a one-time fee of 97€ + 19.70€/month (from the second month on). The 97 euros is for access to the complete archive (videos plus recordings of the grammar lessons) and the 19.70 euros per month is for all the new videos and grammar lessons.

Summary:

“Peters Gastfamilie” is a unique German course. It is different in that it focuses primarily on listening comprehension, putting an emphasis on authentic and genuine speech. The vocabulary, with the help of the videos and photos, is simply and clearly explained. The topics of the videos are always related to what is actually happening in Peter’s family at the moment. This deep look into family life, as well as the ability to speak directly with Peter in the forum and ask him questions, makes “Peters Gastfamilie” my top choice for those who are looking for an “everyday German” course far away from schoolbook German, which in reality no one actually uses.

It is also suitable for teachers who are looking for new ideas for their own lessons.

Registration is free, you get the first videos for free and all the videos and material are of top quality.

Pros

  • Free registration with one free video
  • High quality lessons
  • An intimate look into Germany family life
  • Direct contact with the family is possible
  • Large amount of material
  • Very authentic
  • All videos can be downloaded
  • Very good value for the cost

Cons

  • Communication between the students and family members could be better supported
  • No personal progress of the student is measured
  • The members area could be more neatly arranged

Recommendation: My recommendation is very clear: sign up at “Peters Gastfamilie” and watch the free lesson. Afterwards, you can decide for yourself if you want to be a member of Peter’s family.

You won’t find a better view into German family life and German culture in any other German course!

Individual Ratings With Explanations:

[su_divider top=“no“ size=“1″ margin=“10″][/su_divider]

Vocabulary / Listening Comprehension: You can’t do a better job in terms of vocabulary learning and listening comprehension, so it receives the highest possible rating.

[su_row][su_column size=“1/2″][su_progress_bar style=“fancy“ percent=“98″ text=“Vocabulary“ fill_color=“#fce327″][/su_column][su_column size=“1/2″][su_progress_bar style=“fancy“ percent=“98″ text=“Listening Comprehension“ fill_color=“#fce327″][/su_column][/su_row] [su_divider top=“no“ size=“1″ margin=“10″][/su_divider]

Grammar: Grammar questions can be asked in the forum, and twice a month there is a live grammar lesson in a professional setting (Adobe connect). Peter’s family has been online since August 2014, and with only 2 hours a month of grammar lessons, the grammar section of the website isn’t as comprehensive as the vocabulary and listening comprehension videos. For now it “only” gets 8.5 out of 10 points, but in a few months with more grammar videos it will have a higher rating.

[su_progress_bar style=“fancy“ percent=“85″ text=“Grammar“ fill_color=“#fce327″]

[su_divider top=“no“ size=“1″ margin=“10″][/su_divider]

Speaking: For speaking (why does it say “ebenfalls”?), I give it 7 points. There is a forum that serves for two-way communication and you can practice your speaking by using the podcasts. To get the highest rating there would need to be more possibilities for direct communication between the students. Since the focus of the course isn’t on speaking, I give it 7 points in this area.

[su_progress_bar style=“fancy“ percent=“70″ text=“Speaking“ fill_color=“#fce327″]

[su_divider top=“no“ size=“1″ margin=“10″][/su_divider]

Material: Each video has an unbelievable amount of material. You can download all of it and therefore don’t need to have constant internet access. I simply can’t give anything but the highest rating.

[su_progress_bar style=“fancy“ percent=“98″ text=“Material“ fill_color=“#fce327″]

[su_divider top=“no“ size=“1″ margin=“10″][/su_divider]

User-friendliness: Videos with subtitles, podcasts, exercises, and vocabulary lists, all of which can be downloaded and used without a constant internet connection, are the reasons for a score of 8.5 out of 10. There is a deduction because the members area and access to the archive are not easy to maneuver.

[su_progress_bar style=“fancy“ percent=“85″ text=“User-friendliness“ fill_color=“#fce327″]

[su_divider top=“no“ size=“1″ margin=“10″][/su_divider]

Support: Peter is his own support! If you have any questions, you can go straight to him or his family. He usually fixes technical problems within 24 hours and is happy to answer all other questions by email. 9.5 out of 10!

[su_progress_bar style=“fancy“ percent=“95″ text=“Support“ fill_color=“#fce327″] [su_divider top=“no“ size=“1″ margin=“10″][/su_divider]

Progress Measurement: There is no way to measure your progress on the site. Therefore I can’t give any points. However, in this type of online German course, progress measuring isn’t completely necessary. Therefore I didn’t include this individual rating in the overall score.

[su_progress_bar style=“fancy“ percent=“0″ text=“Progress Measurement“ fill_color=“#fce327″] [su_divider top=“no“ size=“1″ margin=“10″][/su_divider]

Value for money: The value for money is also very good when you compare it to Babbel or GermanPod101 (which are only a bit less expensive) or Rosetta Stone (which is much more expensive). It’s especially good because you learn authentic and genuine German, not just phrases and individual words. Additionally, you can cancel your membership at any time and aren’t required to to pay multiple months or a whole year in advance.
